Back Issues of Sawyer Journals Move to Storage

As part of the long-term strategy of managing our library collections, the Library will begin transferring bound Sawyer Library journals into the newly constructed Library Shelving Facility (LSF).  This process will start in late January, 2009 and continue until all journals have been shifted. See move schedule for details.

This decision, approved by the Library Committee marks the beginning of a new approach to journal access in our libraries.  Our goal is to combine efficient storage (in the high-density LSF) with timely electronic access. Articles from these journals will be requested electronically by users and delivered directly to the desktop through our document delivery systems.  We will guarantee delivery within 24 hours, Monday-Friday.  Default scanning is in black and white but color scanning is available on demand.

Current journals will remain in Sawyer Library. Only bound, back issues of journals will be transferred to the LSF.

The order in which journals will be moved will be according to the areas of the collection that are the most crowded. In order to maintain good access to journals we will limit the number of journals in transit to approximately one hundred per day.

Should the need arise, we are also prepared to return selected physical journals to the appropriate campus library for in-building use. Those journals will be returned to the LSF after they have been used.
